Outline #4

Outline #4: Wikipedia

I.               Introduction

A.   Hook: When you need answers to a problem or question, most of us find ourselves going to and relying on Wikipedia for clarification. But can we trust it? How much of it is true? And if we can’t assume that whatever is on Wikipedia is true, why do we use it?

B.    Context/Background:

·      created in 2001

·      one of the largest reference websites

·      allows anyone to edit articles by adding additional information

C.    Thesis: Wikipedia is an unreliable source for information due to the misuse of people inputting false information on articles.

II.             Body

A.   Wikipedia in the past

·      began in 2001 as a collaborative project to make a complete encyclopedia from scratch

·      started with 13,000 articles and aimed for 100,000

·      started to become a multilingual encyclopedia

·      In the course of years, Wikipedia’s main page changes including a daily featured article.

B.    Wikipedia now

·      the layout and format of the website is similar to how it was years ago

·      the website looks simple as a whole; nothing fancy or catches attention

·      shows daily news, featured picture, history on the day it is, and more

C.    Why we use it

·      simple and easy to find quick information on a subject

·      usually the first link found on a google search

·      most familiar and common to us

·      information is generally correct

III.           Conclusion

A.   Re-State Thesis: Wikipedia is one of the largest reference websites with thousands of different articles, however, it cannot be trusted because it allows anyone to edit information in any article.

Amusement Parks: Fun For You, But Not Your Wallet

Amusement parks, a place where you come in seek of fun, thrilling, and exciting activities, are accessible with a price. They are known for their “once in a lifetime moments” and “never forgetting memories”, but are more commonly known for its high admissions price and overpriced in-park products. These parks, such as Six Flags, ensure that every guest will have an experience an adventure of their lives. With Six Flags having over 25 million visitors walking through the welcoming gates each year, it has become a leading company in the amusement park industry. Six Flags currently has 12 parks spread across the United States, and including one in Mexico. “Mass Production means mass marketing, and mass marketing means the creation of mass stereotypes.” (Twitchell). The mass expansion of several parks across the United States enables people to have their own local parks or travel to experience each unique park. Furthermore, this leads to the stereotyping of Six Flags whether it is good or bad: its fun and exciting experience, or its overly expensive prices. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom located in Vallejo, California is a great example of these stereotypes. At the end of your visit, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom will leave you with great memories, but leave your pockets with nothing. Amusement parks use their fun, thrilling, and exciting activities to distract their guests as they spend more of their money.

Everything you do or going to do inside an amusement park, are and will cost you some cash. Even before you enter the park, you will find yourself spending money before you leave your car. Parking doesn’t come cheap, especially at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom where the prices for parking range from $15 for general parking or $20 for preferred parking. To enter the park, you have to pay for an admission fee that will cost you over and additional $50 per person in your family. If that didn’t clear up your budget, then the in-park services will. The park basically has everything you will need if you haven’t already. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom provides everything from lockers, pictures, to food – all comes with a price.

After entering through the gates into the park, you will find yourself in the main plaza. In the middle of the plaza is a huge dolphin water fountain, which is commonly a place where guests take pictures or relax. Surrounding the fountain are various retail shops for souvenirs and places to eat. At first glance, you wouldn’t notice that every major free attraction around the park, such as rides, shows, and wildlife viewings, have either nearby restaurants, games, or souvenir shops. If you ever run out of money, ATMs are located near every food court or games area. This provides convenience for the guests that will most likely lead them to spending more money. Amusement parks are potential black holes for our wallets, however, some people may disagree. Some might say that purchasing a season pass and leaving the park to eat will prevent you from spending a lot of money inside the park. This is a valid point, although, the season pass is a marketing strategy that keeps the guest coming back for multiple visits. “…birds of a feather flock together. The object…is not to try to twist their feathers so that they will flock to your product, but to position your product in such a place that they will have to fly by it and perhaps stop to roost. After roosting, they will eventually think that this is part of their flyway and return to it again and again.” (Twitchell). This is an analogy that relates the guests at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom to being like birds. If people were to come back to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom multiple times, sooner or later they will have to purchase something. Season pass holders are much more valuable than one-day visitors because they have the potential of purchasing more throughout the whole season as oppose to one day.

Coming to the park on certain days can increase you chances of making your money’s worth. When in the park on weekdays will give you a different experience than in on the weekends. On weekends, the park is usually busy and crowded with people. The lines are too long for you to experience all of the rides in one day. Lines for restaurants can also devalue the money you spent on your food because they can become cold as becomes your turn to pick up your order. Through my research, guests commonly complain that the workers are working too slowly. When speaking with a worker at one of these restaurants, they state that, “…busy days can become tiring that it gets harder to maintain a steady pace, which slows down the line.” With many guests in the park at the same time, the chances of workers getting complaints are higher. When workers get complaints, they become unhappy, and when they are unhappy the guests are unhappy – and unhappy guests means no money. On the other hand, on weekdays, the park is usually slow and don’t have many people, which means there will be nearly to no lines at all. Without the wait or rush, both the workers and guests can be happy and have a great experience for that day.

Along with a price, you can have a fun filled time at any amusement park especially Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. Sadly, guests are too preoccupied with that fun that they do not realize that all that fun is costing them money. When thinking about it, saving money while in the park might sound simple. But when you’re there, it becomes difficult not to. All in all, amusement parks are still a great recreational activity that the whole family will love.

-       “Meet the newest member of the Prius Family. It has all the cargo space you’d expect from a small SUV. Yet it still gets the fuel efficiency of a Prius.” (small font)

-       “The all-new Prius V from Toyota. More Prius. More Possibilities.” (small font, bold)

·      Composition

-       there is a middle class man

-       there are highways, cities, football stadium, grill, etc.

-       the ad is a staged photo-shoot inside a room

·      Layout

-       the color of the background is blue

-       the color of the car is white

B.    Connotations

·      Format

-       the Prius is on the left hand side so it can give the illusion that the stuff are falling out of the car

-       the text on the bottom of the ad is placed there so that it would put more focus on the car

-       the text on the upper left side of the ad is put there so it stands out and is noticeable; this text is important

·      Audience

-       the audience is families because families go out a lot and they want things can save them money

·      Emotion

- the ad wants you to feel fun because families value fun

·      Text

-       short way of saying, a lot can come out of this car with just a little gas; large font and bolded letters are used to stand out more; logos

-       bolded font is used to make it stand out more; ethos

-       small font is used so that it puts more focus on the image and less focus on the text; Prius Family = pathos because it appeals to our emotions about family

-       bolded to be more noticeable because it’s the motto for Prius; Toyota = ethos

·      Composition

-       they chose to use a middle class man because that’s who they want to target

-       the highways, cities, and other stuff are used to show where the Prius V can take you and what you can use the Prius V for

-       the ad is a photo-shoot inside of a room because it wants you to believe that the stuff coming out of the Prius is real

·      Layout

-       background is blue because blue is the color that is most chosen by conservatives; a way to attract the conservative audience even though the car isn’t traditional

-       the car is white because white signifies fresh beginnings so that we can move away from traditional cars and try something new

C.    Counter-argument

·      Format

-       others might say that the text is on the bottom of the ad so there would be more room for the image; my reason is better because the ad cares more about what the audience is focusing on rather than the room of other things

·      Audience

-       others might say that family is the audience because families need a car that can fir their whole family; my reason is better because families can choose any other SUV and it is not a reason why the Prius is a better choice

·      Emotion

-       others might say that the emotion is fun so that you would be excited to look at the ad; my reason is better because it relates more to the family and their values

·      Text

-       others might say that “Pack a lot. Pump a little.” Means that there is more space that can be put in the car; my reason is better because it is a metaphor meaning, “you can do a lot with a little”

·      Composition

-       others might say that the man is a geek and they put that man there because geeks have money; my reason is better because you cannot tell for sure that the man is a geek just because he wears glasses

·      Layout

- others might say that the background is blue because they want to attract boys, my reason is better because blue has become more of a universal color that it can either be for boys or girls

III.           Conclusion

A.    Re-state Thesis

·      According to the ad, the Prius V is the perfect vehicle for families that are on the go because the ad shows that the car has many family values.
